I know I will get flamed but I'm just being frank here with my experiences.

I've lived in other states and moved to Texas for my career. Texas has been great for my career but in terms of building a social circle I just don't fit here. Sure I will say people here are extremely friendly but it only extends to that.

People will exchange pleasantries but it ends there. I feel people have been nice because they are expected to. I am a black male in my early 30s, single, in great shape and health, well off in my career and I'm having issues with dating. It seems that if you're not white or Mexican good luck.

Also I'd probably to be considered more on the preppy side but I've heard some comments from Hispanics here that I'm uppity or whatever. I've had friends talk behind my back. Dating a Hispanic girl I had a female friend (also Hispanic) talk behind my back about me to her unprovoked.

I could be exaggerating things and maybe I'm hanging out at the wrong spots. I am thankful for my career here but I'm getting a disenchanted by San Antonio overall recently. I feel like I need a change of scenery or somewhere more metropolitan.

Dude I totally understand. Seems like those who fit in here are the military, medical, or Mexican. Houston is awesome for those of us (like me and maybe you) who aren't into the three M's of San Antonio.

One of my college buds is a black guy. He ended up working here in town after college and he would always say S.A. sux for a single black guy. He ended up moving to Houston, now married with kids still living in Houston. To this day we still keep in touch.

It's even worse for single black women. I'm stuck in this region until I finish school.

San Antonio is indeed an odd duck. I find myself agreeing with a lot of what you write, except that I'm young, decently successful, well educated and white... SA can be a polarizing town for those who have grown up in truly multicultural other cities, but there's still a lot to love about this place.

More than a few times, I've gotten pegged with a bit of reverse discrimination simply because I don't look like I would fluently speak Spanish (I do), taken some flak for my very Scand/Swed looks (from folks speaking in loud Spanish, thinking I wouldn't understand... I did) and definitely have times when I miss living in a city that's truly comfortable intermixing without people always having to either play the poor victim card or rich/powerful hand.

All of that being said, I still think the good seriously outweighs the bad in San Antonio. Perhaps it's the area you were living in? While my hood of Southtown has its own issues at play, I can honestly say that race/lifestyle acceptance is not one of them. Never has been in the 10+ years I've owned here.

Wherever you end up, never forget that 'no matter where you go, there you are.'

I wish you a better living existence than what you've experienced here in San Antonio

I'm sorry to hear that and even sorrier that I'm not surprised.

Whether you stay here or you move on, I wish you all the best.

Maybe less a change of scenery and more a change of the area of the city you currently live in. San Antonio very big and spread out. You'd be surprised at what you'll find just moving to another area of the city.
