Hi, I'm looking at a number of jobs around the country in my agency and one of them is in New Braunfels. I've been to San Antonio for a conference and really liked it but am concerned that as a fairly liberal, 30s, single person from the northeast that I wouldn't like living way out in the suburbs too much. If I were to go for this job, what might be some good areas to consider living closer to the city that would better suite someone in my demographic?

Thanks!

Closer to the city. Hands down. If you want to be close to 35 to get to New Braunfels I would recommend looking for housing in the Government Hill or Pearl/Tobin Hill area. They are right by 35 and urban/single/liberal approved. Areas outside of 410 near 35 are iffy at the best and anything further north than that is pretty suburban.

I live on the NE side of San Antonio a couple of miles north of 410 between 281 and IH-35. It takes me about 25 min. to get to New Braunfels. If you want to be in a little more urban area, then Eisenhauer/Harry Wurzbach/Austin Hwy wouldn't be a much longer drive. That area is ethnically diverse and close to some specialty grocery stores if you're into that. I only live a few minutes away from Sprouts, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and Central Market (an upscale grocery store).

Thanks for the replies! Yes, From what I had looked at myself it looked like somewhere around the 410 belt might be a good compromise between being closer to the urban core but not so far in it would be a real long commute. I can handle around a 30 minute commute but much beyond that would be a bit much...especially since this job would also be shift work. Is there much in the way of public transit into the city from the 410 area?

Public transit is limited to buses right now, and it readily available inside loop 410. The area around loop 410 is rapidly urbanizing. Especially from I-10 to I-35.

If my job was in New Braunfels, that's where I would live.

I moved to New Braunfels from NY (Westchester County) 3 years ago and don't miss it at all. I live 5 miles from I-35 and when I want a taste of the city (concerts, theater, museums, more restaurants) I head 40 minutes north to Austin or 35 minutes south to San Antonio (downtown areas of both cities). There is enough to keep me entertained in New Braunfels; nightly live music, restaurants, rivers, and the lake. Rent before you decide to decide on a permanent location.
