SAN ANTONIO — Drivers, prepare for the gridlock monster — this weekend U.S. 281 near the San Antonio International Airport will be shut down for construction on the new section of Wurzbach Parkway.
Starting Friday night through early Monday, construction crews will close all of the main lanes of U.S. 281 between Nakoma Drive and Bitters Road.
That's right — northbound and southbound.
There's more. Crews will also shut down the northbound frontage road between Nakoma and Bitters.

Ah, but it's only the beginning of the challenges that await 281 commuters. Construction is just weeks away from beginning on the north half of the 281/1604 interchange.

Really? Didn't realize it was so close to starting. Haven't heard anything about this?

Living at 281 and Thousand Oaks, I guess I'll be hiding in my house all weekend. That closure is just going to swamp Jones Maltsberger Northbound since the access road will be closed northbound between Nakoma and Bitters as well.

If you are going North from Thousand Oaks you should be fine.

Once you get to 281 you should be fine. I expect all the north south side roads in that area are going to be crushed with traffic. Considering you would have to go all the way to Blanco on the west side of 281, I am betting Jones Maltsberger and Thousand Oaks are going to be brutal this weekend.

One positive for the People of Stone Oak, traffic should be a little lighter this weekend as everyone will be stuck in the bottleneck around Bitters and slowly let traffic into Stone Oak instead of a full freeway leading people in.

The work that was scheduled for I-10 this weekend was cancelled. Not that that would be a major detour, but it might help some people.

It's been front page news on the EN for two days....

Yes, it's a PITA, but it's also needed and for future avoidance of gridlock. If we want to avoid becoming like Austin, it's just something we have to deal with.
