I am a member of the bank but I live in Houston. I went to to san Antonio recently and passed by what looked like a college campus.
It was usaa. Here im thinking this is just a normal bank all this time. It looks like a too secret government facility.

USAA is not only a bank but offers military families and their dependents insurance and investments. The San Antonio campus is the largest but there are also locations in Phoenix, Colorado Springs and Tampa. They also just opened a location in Plano, TX. They have also opened many financial and Wealth management centers in various locations to help their members in building face-2-face relationship. Of course since most members are not near an actual location there are a lot of employees that are phone representatives. There is also a large number of IT employees to make sure the members have a great experience whether they are using dotcom as the way to do their business or call a representative on the phone. USAA needs to have top notch computer applications for the member to use (dotcom and mobile) as well as the phone rep to have great tools to use to assist members on the phone. It takes a lot of people to keep everything running smoothly.

In addition USAA offers its employees at the SAT location three fitness centers on campus, picnic areas, basketball and tennis courts on the campus.

Not only do they fill the main campus, but they also utilize space in the Colonnade, and building off of DeZavala, and downtown. The grounds are also maintained using a grey water system, and much is left in a natural state.

Interesting enough, they just relaxed their employee dress code further Friday, now allowing for shorts.

It is mostly a big call center. As a member, when you call in for assistance with your banking, insurance or investing needs you are probably talking to someone in San Antonio. It is certainly better than talking to someone in India but the accents are still thick in most San Antonio call centers and sometimes hard to understand.

USAA main building is supposedly over a mile long but that is just what I heard and don't know for sure.

While I would agree that USAA is not "just a call center," many of the people that work for USAA work as if it were a call center, with a cubicle and headset with certain numbers and quality assurance numbers they must meet. They may be called something like a "mortage processor" or something but they are in a call center setting.

Have you actually been inside the place? I mean, all 5 million square feet?

Btw, what you're describing isn't a "call center" setting. It's an office setting.
