I'm looking for some good cheap Mexican food. I mean a tiny mom-and-pop restaurant, preferably one that might sell carne asada burritos. I don't want some expensive ($10/plate) sit-down restaurant and especially not a tourist place like the Riverwalk. I live on the northwest side of town and am looking for something on that side that is similar to value and taste of Jalisco on Nacadoches on the northeast side of town. Even if it IS on the opposite side of town, I'd much appreciate any suggestions anyone has about such a hole-in-the-wall or not-so-well-known little gem of a Mexican joint here in town.

I don't know if its still there, but Old Car Cafe near St. Mary's University wasn't bad on cost but great on food. We used to have lunch there everyday.

I usually go to the one located on Jones Maltsberger by the SAPD Northside Office called La Potranca. Its a nice little hole in the wall and I enjoy their food

Las Brazos on Vance Jackson in the vicinity of La Fogata and El Rafas Cafe on Hildebrand between Fredericksburg Rd and I-10. Both good food and price although El Rafas is superior to Las Brazos in regards to food... both are really cheap and you will also get alot more food at El Rafas. Everything is excellent and the atmosphere is better than Las Brazos.

There are excellent cheap mom & pops on just about every corner in SA. Most won't have carne asada burritos, they're not a mainstay in SA, but will have great tacos and other great food.

Oooh, you had to bring up carne asada, didn't you? Two things I haven't been able to find in podunk Kansas City -- a good carne asada, and sushi-grade fish. *sigh*

On the NW side there is Los Agua Calientas (sp???). It is next to Hills and Dales. It is on 1604 and I can't think of the other road but its around Kyle Seale Pkwy. I'm sure someone will chime in and let us know the road
It is good and cheap. Not too many tables and it gets crowded at lunchtime.

I've never been there but Amy's Tex Mex on Culebra always has lots of cars. I've heard it is good and inexpensive too.

Amy's is pretty good--definitely a hole in the wall! But the coffee and food are satisfying, for sure. And they always have a crowd.
