I'm a 25 year old grad student with a 5 year old and newborn. After I graduate next year with my MA in Marriage Family Therapy, I plan to relocate out of Tennessee (far far away from Memphis) and am really looking to move to Texas. I have researched various sites to see how living is there and which cities are best but I like to get opinions from people actually living there than reading articles about living there.

I have family in Georgia and have lived in Memphis my whole life, so if it makes any difference to anyone reading this, I am use to heat and hot summers. So based off what I've been reading, San Antonio is a top city pick for me and my family. I just have a few questions I would like answered from personal experience than from articles:

1. Which areas/neighborhoods are good to live in? What areas/neighborhoods should be avoided?

2. What schools/school districts are good and which should I avoid?

3. How family oriented is it there? Things to do with small children? How safe is it there for a young family?

4. I would still have to gain supervision hours before working as a MFT so I would definitely need some sort of income coming from somewhere. How is the job market? .... If there are any therapists/counselors/psychologists reading this how is the outlook for an MFT since I will be working towards getting licensed in that state?

If there is anything I missed asking that you think is important to take into consideration, please feel free to add. I plan to make a few trips out there this year to get a feel for the area myself, but your answers will definitely help me get started in a good direction. Thanks everyone.

As far as the job market, it's a tight one. We are a very tight knit group of non-profit/social service professionals where a lot of times you need to know someone who knows someone to get into the organization. I wouldn't discourage you from the SA area, just know that getting the hours may be tough as an intern.

In addition, are you going to stay in Texas after you finish your hours? You may want to check the licensing requirements for the states you may want to live in as far as transferring your license (as an LMSW it was a concern for me).

Good luck.

Think the OP should be looking in Houston.

I don't know about MFT, but I gave up on trying to find a chemical dependency counselor internship. I'm just going to use my PhD to waive the internship requirement.

Wow. I'm surprised that Center for healthcare services didn't take you (but, then again, they didn't take me either, so).

Before I gave up, they hadn't had an opening for LCDC internships in years. The only place that regularly has openings in the San Antonio area is some for-profit organization, but I can't remember their name right now. I was called for an interview once. It was down to two people, and I was one of them. The other person got the job. Being that I was so close to being hired, I'm surprised they didn't call me in for an interview the times I applied afterward. There were some internships in Hondo and Kerrville, but those cities were way too far from where I lived.
