Any suggestions on apartments in good areas that aren't too long of a commute?

Literally anywhere that isn't St. Mary's.

Okay, just kidding. I have a friend who lives a few blocks from St. Mary's and she loves it. However, I would recommend being a bit closer to the Bandera/Callaghan 410ish area. I know there is someone who lives in my complex that commutes to St. Mary's. I don't think we live much more than 20 minutes from St. Mary's. I am just outside 410 on Evers. But this also depends on budget.

Do you have an apartment complex you'd recommend that's around 30 minute drive?
