Not true. I have watched several events on it with no subscription including the ESPYs and the New York City marathon. Both live and in real time, same as you would on a regular TV. The selection is iffy and is the same as you would get online-

Watch Live NBA Games with NBA LEAGUE PASS from NBA.COM ) and the unfortunate answer is we'd be SOL on live Spurs games until 72 hours after the game. The blackout is based on your IP. Sooooo, like all cordcutting there are workarounds - the simplest would be to use a VPN with an exit in outside of the San Antonio market.
Cordcutting is not easy, nor will it be until the sports leagues can see a profit opportunity to eschew their deals with TV/radio for a subscription model. Unfortunately, they will never see profitable subscription levels while they blackout local market games. Chicken meet egg.

It's more like chicken and robin's egg. FSNSW is getting money from EVERY cable/dish subscriber for carriage of the channel. There's no way they could match the ease, consistency and quantity of revenue with an opt-in model, selling their Spurs, Rangers and Stars games only to SA residents who are willing to pay for them.

Most of your options without cable won't be live channels, they will be streamed shows. You don't tune in to Channel X to watch Show Y anymore. Instead, you find a streaming service that offers Show Y, you pick an episode of it and you watch it. That's not flipping, that's drilling.

If you get rid of cable, and use an antenna instead, for free local OTA channels, you will just use your TV set's built-in tuner, instead of a cable box. The Roku, or other device, will be fed through one of your TV's inputs, much like your cable box. So you will have to switch between inputs on your TV, depending on whether you are watching a local channel, or a channel fed through some other set-top box.

Wow, I can't imagine paying $140+ per month for that stuff. We used to have DirecTV and paid about $40/month for TV only. I thought I had to have sports....until we pulled the plug. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I've literally never thought "Man, I wish I had spent more time sitting on the couch watching sports this week." Now, we only have internet in our house.
