Staying at Red Roof Inn on Houston and Live Oak. I should be arriving on Saturday around 5pm and will get dinner with my boss but then have the night to do what I want with. Thinking about walking to Riverwalk to check out the scene there, maybe Coyote Ugly or Waxy O'Connors. Will it be safe to walk back at the end of the night crossing under Hwy 37? Area around the Red Roof doesn't look the best in Google Street View

Well not as relevant anymore to me, but maybe someone else will find it curious. Due to the cold / rainy weather my boss wants me to rent a car.

You should be safe. I wouldn't worry too much if its freezing and raining. If you run in to homeless people or vagrants, they most likely won't disturb you because they're probably concerned with the elements. And yeah, I've traversed those areas and never felt weird.

Default Safe,

I second what SADave has entered here, you will be safe. Downtown S.A. is a safe area. There is however some inherent risk in life, always.

No problem, even for a woman with an expensive camera gear. Vagrants are there, and might ask for money, but they are not aggressive.

I would suggest a $5-$7 cab ride. Better to be safe than sorry. There is not much pedestrian traffic in the area to feel completely safe in my opinion.

You want to go to Coyote Ugly and you're worried about walking under a bridge?

Have fun on the Riverwalk and don't worry about walking back to the hotel. My husband and I park under the bridge at Houston street when we go downtown which is next to the Red Roof Inn. It isn't bad at all for us when walking. I have never felt unsafe. Again if the weather isn't great and you feel uncomfortable you can always get a cab or uber back to your hotel after dark.
