Hello, I'm 54 years old and military retired

and need to use my GI Bill before I lose it..

I have a truck repair maintenance background but I'm tired of it

looking to start a fresh new career in something but don't know what

Which college in town is worth going to?

Any suggestions?

It would help to know what you want to study, but you can complete or at least start on just about any educational path at the Alamo Community Colleges.

I would recommend staying away from "for-profit" schools...

Wayland Baptist (Wayland Baptist University San Antonio) has a satellite campus here, is very affordable, and has a large military and veteran student body.

+1 for Alamo Community Colleges.
Just pick the campus near you. I like SAC (San Antonio College).

I got my degree at St Marys, which is a fine school, but a bit expensive.

Alamo Colleges are so inexpensive for local residents, it seems like a shame for the OP to use his GI bill to attend them.

I'd suggest UTSA. Much more $$$ per credit hour.

Do you like computers? I keep hearing that jobs are plentiful in cybersecurity and UTSA has an acclaimed program in that field.

Returning to school is fine at any age. I recommend it.

I went back to school at age 50. (totally different field... from technical to managerial). It was a good program that will serve my future personal investment needs well.

Be cautious, I have had a hard time changing careers into a good paying gig in new field. Most of the hiring managers are the age of your kids, and they want young blood / energy / ability to 'form YOUR personality into their mold'.

I suggest staying in a related field, but more suited to your ability to work into old age.
Also recommend a higher quality school / network / alumni group than a community college (which I advocate for younger / technical career / edu paths leading to a higher University program). Your best option at new work will be through friends / contacts, NOT through applying for jobs.

BTW: one of my 60 yr old friend's works for Uhaul as a truck mechanic (On-line trouble shooting from his beautiful Mtn home) 100% 'grease / knuckle busting-free'
