I've used turbo tax for years and love that product. They also have personal pro. Basically, you input some info and then if you want a tax pro to finish it you just quit entering info. I saw the prices online and it looks like federal returns vary $99.95 to $149.95 and state returns are $29.95 (which includes a phone meeting). And the higher price is for schedules c,d,e,f. Honestly, that is great deal. I'm in MD and the tax people around here charge extra for every single schedule added to a return and that adds up really fast.

There's also the VITA program which is a free income tax assistance program. They can prepare taxes for incomes of $45,000 or less. The phone number is 211.

Has anyone here had first-hand experience with VITA tax preparation services? I've always done my own taxes in the past, but last year I liquidated a mutual fund I had held for many years, and as a result I will have a HUGE capital loss for 2007 (paid taxes on dividend & capital gain distributions throughout the years).I know I will need to complete Schedules A, B, & D. Schedule D in particular looks daunting, and I have several pages of Gain/Loss summary from the mutual fund. I am well within the VITA income limitation, and I don't have a very high tax liability. I would hate to have to pay $500 (mentioned by the first poster) for tax preparation. I just don't know if VITA is equipped to handle complex returns.

VITA tax preparation services will prepare Schedules A & B, but not D.

We have COMPLICATED taxes...and use Francis McCarty at the Huebner & Babcock location of H&R Block, in the little strip mall next to Caparellea's Italian across the street from the HEB.

She is VERY good....I would not use anyone except her there...(she was referred to us by the lady that had done our taxes for years but had to quit as her hubby became quite ill). I normally schedule her last 2-3 hours of the day or her FIRST 2-3 hours of the day because I think there are only about 3 IRS forms that we do not have to use with all the investments/rentals, etc. She knows her stuff. Our average bill is about $400, but I figure it is money well spent as we normally get our tax rate to about the 12% level with all the legit loopholes. (And they STILL kept WAY too much!!!)
