thank you all for your replies, i'm leaning toward San Antonio, spent a couple days there this week and just dig the overall vibe. Spent some time in Houston last month and it reminds me of LA, but humid. Now on to my next question, where is a good place to live if I want to be near stuff to do? local bars, local food, coffee, interesting shops etc

TIA

Downtown, Pearl, Southtown, Tobin Hill, Alta Vista, Beacon Hill, Government Hill, Monte Vista, Mahncke Park, and possibly Lone Star and Roosevelt Park in a year or two.

I like to be open-minded about all cities, including the ones you list. (The only thing I hate is the "way too cool" attitude of places like Austin.) I've been to Houston a few times, and I honestly think San Antonio is a better bet for you. My tastes and age are similar to yours. San Antonio just feels more "dense" to me than Houston when it comes to the things you mention. Basically, there are two areas that should interest you: right north of downtown (Midtown/Tobin Hill/Pearl) and right south (Southtown/Lavaca/King William). When it comes to live music, the former is definitely the place to be. There's a brand new venue called Paper Tiger on the St. Mary's Strip that is having a ton of great shows, and there are other venues and dive bars there, too. (All of this is in Tobin Hill.) If you want to get "fancy," all you have to do is head a few blocks away and go to the Pearl Brewery area and lower Broadway. I love Southtown, but it seems a lot quieter (and a bit nicer), but there's very little live music there, and there are far fewer dive bars. Places like La Tuna, though, are gems.

Either way, these areas are pretty close to each other. You can bike between them in 15 minutes or so, and a car ride is much less than that.

The one thing that is definitely different about San Antonio is that it has a very, very Hispanic vibe in all parts aside from the north. I'm not Hispanic, but I've always felt very welcome here. People are friendly, and the city has a very unique feel because of its culture and heritage.

This article has a pretty good description of the area I mention as well as some of the issues confronting San Antonio:

And yes, Austin is much closer to San Antonio, but there are more and more shows here all the time, and I feel less and less interested in going up there anymore.

Good luck with your decision!
