The forum tells me that "Finding rentals" is not a good enough title for a thread, because that thread already exists in Tampa and some other forum. I'm sure those would be totally helpful for finding rentals in San Antonio, nevertheless, I'm starting a new thread.

I'm probably going to get orders to San Antonio in the next week. I think I will be there by mid September. I'll be working at Ft. Sam.

I've been looking at these sites for leads, but I'm wondering if there's something better that I've missed.

AHRN - no longer DoD sanctioned. Are the listings real?
homes.mil - never has any listings in areas where I want to live and usability leaves MUCH to be desired
HotPads - can't limit effectively by features
mySanAntonio - seems to list only places for a big bankroll
Realtor.com - seems to be the best of the lot, but I'm not crazy about it

I haven't been looking at Crag's list simply because of the number of scammers. Where else should I be looking?

For a lot of rentals, you simply have to drive around the area and look. Where are you being assigned? As you know, we have multiple bases here. 78251 and 78253 are two zips popular with Lackland. Not sure sure for Fort Sam, Camp Bullis, Randolph etc...What about Zillow? Also, click on "search this forum" within San Antonio...and type in "home rentals"...this way you only get San Antonio results...plenty of threads.

Housing Office in the JBSA-Fort Sam Houston Welcome Center. Best place to start. Staff can point you to the sources of rental properties. If you are military (assumed because you stated "orders"), you are supposed to check with them before entering a lease off-post anyway, to avoid landlords or properties that are banned--keeps you from getting scammed or moving into a place where others have been victimized. It probably says it right on your orders.......

I am a DA Civilian. I'm OCONUS now and had to use housing, but won't when I get stateside. I have never found them particularly helpful.

Homes.mil is the DoD replacement for AHRN, but it doesn't have great utility. It doesn't seem to have a lot of listings and it requires a 16 digit password that has to be changed every time you sneeze just to be able to browse the listings.

I'll only be able to look after work and on weekends as I'll be starting right away. That makes it tough to get a look at something before it's taken. If I can meet the landlord, they all seem to want me as a tenant - childless, petless couple past the "party hearty" age. My husband is retired military and I am GS.
