I have two chinchillas and their diet includes hay. I've found the cheapest (and best quality) hay is purchased from a feed store or something similar in bulk and then stored and used as needed (i.e. not at a pet store or somewhere similar where it's packaged in small amounts and marked up a lot).

I'm looking for some place to buy timothy hay, a half-bale or maybe a bale at a time. If anyone knows of a place like that around SA and could point me in the right direction I'd be grateful.

Try Locke Hill Feed Store--they're off Huebner. I love this place.

To be honest, timothy hay is REALLY hard to find in Texas. Locke Hill, and other feed stores, will have what's called coastal hay, as that is what is customarily grown and fed in Texas.

I'm not saying that Locke Hill (which I love too! it's great!) or Barkley's (south of Boerne on I-10) or D&D in Seguin don't have or can't obtain timothy, but if you just show up they're probably just going to have coastal in stock.

Maybe you can call them and see if they can get timothy in from somewhere else, or maybe your chinchillas can make the switch to coastal. My experience is with horses, but horses that move from areas where the hay is predominantly timothy generally switch just fine to coastal.

Default Lawdoc

We have five guinea pigs and also went looking for Timothy Hay in bulk several weeks ago and were please to find that Locke Hill Feed Store carries a 10 lb. bag of Timothy Hay, and a 25 lb box as well. We buy the 10 lb. bag which runs $12.99. The bag is marked Timothy Hay, not coastal hay, its packaged by Sun Seed Company of Ohio. Sounds like you may be interested in the 25 lb. box, though.

Thanks a lot for the recommendations and details that they do indeed have Timothy hay. Sounds like a great place I can also go to for supplies/food when I look into getting a cat in a year or so.

I know this post is super old but came across and thought I would add to it just in case anyone has a similar circumstance to mine and uses this post for help. Small Pet Select is where I get my piggies and buns hay from. They're based in the washington but do free shipping country wide (and you can automate your purchases every few months...so you don't accidentally run into a "no hay" situation). To boot, I think their prices are very fair. Here's their site: All Hay

I would like to add that in the off season unshelled pecans are impossible to find. I tried Locke feed but they couldn't help. When my dad passed I inherited his pet squirrel unprepared. I quickly ran out of his favorite food. Nuts.com to the rescue!

For anyone looking for guinea pig hay, they do just fine with coastal hay. I buy the timothy sometimes as a treat, but a square bale of coastal hay costs about $12 and lasts four or five months for my four piggies.
