Whats the general opinions on these systems? We are currently on a septic and have no issues and felt no problem about staying on one. But, after reading about possible issues, this concerns me about cancelling idea. Do you have to go on a maintenance program and have it inspected all the time?

Personally, I wouldn't go from septic on a bet. You'll have ongoing inspection requirements, in addition to a more complex system, complete with pumps, etc.

I have an aerobic system and have for the past 15 years. As long as they are properly maintained they are great systems. Of course anything not properly maintained is a problem.

As for the requirement of having a maintenance contract that changed in approximately 2008. The State did require before then that either you had a maintenance contract or you became certified so you could do it yourself. Unfortunately now the State has left the requirement for maintenance contracts up to each jurisdiction that permits and monitors aerobic septic systems. The Texas Commission On Environmental Quality (TCEQ) oversees the On Site Sewage Facility (septic system) program. On their WEB page is a link for consumers if you click it https://www.tceq.texas.gov/licensing/ossf . On the consumer page is a search function to find the Designated Agent that handles your area. If you call them they can tell you the current rules for maintenance contracts in your area.
