My husband and I will be relocating soon and since he does construction we go where the work is. Right now we are in Houston, but want to get out as soon as his current job is finished. We are considering San Antonio or Austin for work, but don't necessarily want to live in the city. What towns are within a reasonable commute time (30-40 minutes) that we could find a place to rent for around 1400/mo we don't need a big place it will just be he and I and 2 dogs. TIA!

Find out where he is working first then we can tell you what is "reasonable commute time) of 30-40 mins.

Unfortunately we never know where construction jobs will be exactly, he could work 6 months in one location then move to another area. I guess from the downtown area

We can't possibly tell you that. If he ends up working on the complete opposite side of town, the commute could be a nightmare. 30-40 minutes East of downtown would put him 1 hour plus to the Far West etc....sorry. There is construction going on all over the place

I understand. I'll check in when we have a better idea of where work will be!

If I worked downtown and wanted to be 30-40 mins away to be "outside of the city", then I guess Poteet would work. Straight shot down I-35S and then Highway 16.

A lot of rentals should be coming up now that the fracking industry is slowing down a lot.

I'd suggest looking around Lytle, which is IH35 South. It's about 10 minutes from 1604 and 15 from Loop 410 and either of those can take you anywhere in SA or stay on 35 which goes to downtown. You'll have decent schools if that's an issue and low taxes versus SA. If you live IN Lytle, police there is tops. Most folks don't understand construction and the travel involved. Lytle is your best bet if you want the small town appeal yet close to the big town.

New Braunfels or San Marcos - your most likely job areas would be San Antonio/Austin, I'm thinking......

San Marcos or Wimberley (half way between cities / potential employment)
