Larry Coker will not return as head coach at UTSA, sources tell FootballScoop.
Coker brought the long-awaited Roadrunners’ football program into existence in 2011, cresting with an 8-4 season as a member of the Western Athletic Conference in 2012 and a 7-5 mark (and 6-2 in league play) in Conference USA a year later. But the program fell to 7-17 over the past two seasons, and athletics director Lynn Hickey will opt to search for the second head coach in UTSA football history. Coker signed a new contract running through the 2018 season in August 2014.

Default Coker resigns...what's next for the UTSA Roadrunners?

They hire a new coach.

According to Mike Taylor this morning, the program is in a bad way right now. Coker's departure comes when the program had openings at Offensive Coordinator, Defensive Coordinator and a managerial position related to Football Operations. They have far too many vacancies when national signing day is just a month away. Don't expect a turnaround from whoever they hire, with that many holes to fill in the staff.

The only positive note is that there is a national football coaches convention meeting here in SA, later this week. Lynn Hickey will have a lot of opportunities to meet with coaches from around the country.

The school will use a search firm and hopes to get things done in two weeks. The AFCA Convention in San Antonio next week is an opportunity for the school to meet with candidates.

Where's DGarcia879? Thought he would have some input on this.
Hope he's not in a fetal position sucking his thumb in denial....

SAN ANTONIO — LSU running backs coach and recruiting coordinator Frank Wilson has been offered the UTSA coaching job and is expected to take it, sources said Thursday night.
The 42-year-old Wilson emerged on the ninth day of the search to become the choice for the Roadrunners, said the sources, whose comments mirrored reports on FootballScoop.com and in the Baton Rouge Advocate.

Earlier in the day, Oklahoma State defensive coordinator Glenn Spencer had been in serious contention. But Wilson, regarded as one of the top recruiters in the nation, reportedly fared well in his interview and was given the nod.

Hopefully, Wilson can do a better job of recruiting the local area. That may require the program investing a few million in a facilities update.

Talk about an unanticipated hire. I fully expected, the safer bet, Glen Spencer, to get the position. Frank Wilson is a high risk/high reward type of guy. He doesn't have much head coaching experience, save for his high school time. But He coached at Tennessee, LSU, was the nation's best recruiter three times in a row. He's placed lots of names in the NFL. Not that he will get the same recruits, but I do think UTSA will upgrade it's talent.

Very surprised to see Lynn Hickey go with an SEC hire and not poach an Oklahoma State Cowboy [Brooks Thompson, Larry Coker].

If you read between the lines Coker was given the option of retiring or be fired.
