Hi all! I've been searching the forums, but this is my first time actually posting. My husband is currently in the Navy and has 14 months left on his contract. He will be going reserves/DOD after this contract ends. San Antonio is on the top of our list on places to settle down. I am in the nursing field(LPN going on 6yrs& continuing to RN). My husband is an IT/IT instructor, with 10 years experience next year. My question to everyone is how to go about getting an IT job in San Antonio? Specifically for anyone who has experienced going from the military to a civilian job..when do you even start applying? I know that there are many Technology companies in Texas. We currently live in Pensacola, FL, so it's not the easiest to just go to Texas for an interview. We are also looking at places to live in San Antonio. Ideally, we want to build our own home after a year of being settled down. The issue I'm having with finding a rental, is the fact that we have 3 dogs(belgian malinois, german shepherd, husky). Any help would be appreciated!

The SEC I know likes to hire military IT folks and so does JP Morgan Chase. Just need to pick a firm that appreciates it.

Don't forget to check out USAJOBS.GOV for civil service positions that might even help with your move should he get hired!

Look into USAA also. They like to hire veterans and IT is always looking for great people.

Regarding rentals -- have you tried private property management companies? Or considered working through a real estate agent? The website militarybyowner (?) might also help. Three dogs is a lot. My brother (retired AF COL) had a terrible time finding a rental in SA years ago when he and his wife had two dogs. It might have been three dogs. I can't remember. They eventually rented from another military family. No one would budge (and my brother took it personally but it was really a matter of wear and tear.)

Regarding jobs, USAA, USAJOBS are good. Don't forget to have your husband check out Indeed.com, update his LinkedIn profile, etc. There are lots of government contractors in the SA area that look at and list on those sites. I can't speak to the stability of federal contract employment, but it could lead to something permanent.

Good luck!! I think you'll like San Antonio! It's a great town.
