Hello everyone,

I recently learned my home is equipped with this gas tubing. It runs through the attic and walls. I was told by my inspector that this tubing has been blamed to cause numerous of fires when lighting strikes near homes. I am now thinking about having the tubing replaced with the old fashion black iron pipes. Does anyone else have this tubing? Anyone familiar with it? Is it safe enough to keep?

Thanks

Well, I don't recall any fires related to it being reported in this area....might try google, but I think you may be overly concerned.

Did some googling - looks like there are reports related to them. Google "CSST fire lightening".

Fires have been linked to punctures in CSST due to lightning strikes. However the use of the word "numerous" is relative. How many fires did your Inspector state were directly linked to lightning related punctures in the CSST?

Any home with CSST for any part of the gas distribution system (even additions to black iron) should be fully inspected for the condition of the piping and to ensure that proper bonding of the distribution system is performed to the home's electrical ground point. Proper bonding can help reduce the potential of damage to the piping and hence reduce the chances of a fire.

Read your statement from the Inspector above and in particular the bold part. How "near homes" the CSST is affected by a lightning strike is still unknown and under debate. Any lightning strike in very close proximity to a home can damage a whole lot more than the CSST, and with a strike directly on the home all bets are off even with a black iron distribution system!
