I would like to buy a first vehicle for my teen-aged son. I'm thinking that with all the hail-damaged cars out there, I might be able to buy something heavily discounted. I'm not wanting to go to a dealership because my budget is less than what they are selling them for. But, I'm thinking that insurance companies are totaling so many vehicles because of what I consider cosmetic damage. I would love to buy a cheap vehicle that runs well - he won't care if it has hail damage.

But, any suggestions on where I could buy these types of vehicles?

Appreciate any advice!

Sherry

Those would be cars with salvage titles. I'd strongly suggest calling your insurance company first to see if they will even cover it. You will have to pay cash for it as there won't be a loan. When you go to sell it, it's all but worthless as a trade in or private sale. It's bad investment. Since you're going to pay cash for it, I'd look at the estate sales. I've come across many a pristine car for little money, like a 2006 Impala 4 door, loaded with 28,000 miles on it for $4800.00. The car still smelled new inside and you couldn't tell it was ever driven. Not all are like that but if you have time, watch the estate sales.

If the insurance company totals the car, as the OP suggests, it will have a salvage title, NO rumor, fact.

Just got an email from mission Mitsubishi and they're pushing a "hail sale," but I think it's some crap to get people in. But, with that said, a base lancer or lower prices lancer would be a nice car for a teenager.

We were looking at cars for other reasons but I noticed that the salespeople at sleazy dealers were taking some off MSRP like it was a big deal.

You need to check out the deal you could have gotten for a new one - let's say you could get 2000 bucks off MSRP by haggling. That's the base price to start haggling down a hail price.

Don't forget the "rebuilt title" as well.

Thanks everyone for your input. I found an on-line auction site that has lots of cars in San Antonio up for auction. Not sure exactly how it all works but I'm looking into it. And yes, it looks like the hail-damaged cars have a "salvage title" according to the listings on this website. I checked with my insurer, GEICO and they will insure it though.
