I'm an old slow guy but the policeman said I was going 30 in a 20 school zone. First ticket I have had in almost 50 years so I suppose my time is up. I was on the far west side, unfamiliar area, with a client looking at commercial real estate. Ticket writing is fast and efficient now - sign a portable device that then scans the inspection/registration windshield sticker give the policeman your license who takes it to the patrol car for all of 2 minutes and returns with a three foot long 5 inch wide ticket.

Here's my questions about what I should do:
1/ Pay the $213 by mailing a check to the court under "no contest"?

2/ Lawyer ?

3/ Can you do driver school to satisfy a school zone ticket ? Should I given my clean record ?

I remember long ago when doing driver school was nearly impossible given the three court visits that were required along with the day long class.

By the way no students anywhere on the roads, apparently the school zone times are generous. I'll go back tomorrow to see where the zone was. I did not notice one.

If your record is clean, I'd want to keep it that way. Traffic school is now done online and is pretty simple .

He needs to check to see if he can take traffic school. He may not be allowed due to it being in a school zone. I would try the traffic school first and if that is a no go see if a lawyer can get you deferred adjudication.

On line traffic course is the way I would suggest.

It appears as long as not sited with passing a school BUS, you are eligible if you meet the following criteria:

Step 1: Determine if you are eligible to take defensive driving.
You can take a Texas defensive driving course if you meet the following conditions:
You have not taken a defensive driving course within the past 12 months.
Do not have a commercial driver’s license (CDL)
Are not currently taking a defensive driving course for a different violation.
Most minor citations can be dismissed with a defensive driving course. A Texas defensive driving course may NOT be taken to dismiss any of the following violations:
Speeding at or more than 25 MPH over the posted speed limit
No car insurance
Leaving the scene of an accident (hit and run)
Passing a school bus
Construction zone violations
Step 2: Request permissions from the court to take a driving safety course.
Mention that you will be enrolling in our TEA approved course (CP #947) and receive their approval to do so.

Online defensive driving is miserable. I'd go to a live class. Definitely do defensive driving, though.

Call the JP you're supposed to report to and ask for deferred adjudication. Pay the fine and you're put on "probation" for X number of days and as long as you don't get another ticket in that time frame, the ticket is dismissed.

I think it would be better to take the Defensive Driving. It's only $25 and it cuts down the fine (still have to pay over $100 in court costs) AND for me, it saves $50 a year on my auto insurance.

First, avoid the courthouse and do your appearance through a kiosk close to your home. Sanantonio.gov website can tell you where they are located. Do defensive driving if Judge will approve so you can get the insurance break. Thats assuming its a City ticket and not a County or DPS ticket.

I did it online. Boring way to spend a couple of weekend afternoons, but it was better than driving across town and spending 2 days with strangers. Biggest hassle I had with it was finishing each section faster than the allotted time and having to wait out the timer to meet the state requirement for 8 hours of class time. I chose to keep a magazine handy or get up and walk around.
