I have only been here for a week or so and the one thing that still boggles my mind a little is all the different names for the same highway. Example IH 10 is also 90 is also 87 and so on. Is there a reason for this? And is there an easy way to remember all this other than just memorizing it?

Default It's like that everywhere...

It's pretty much the same story as other places around the country where Interstates took the place of US Routes. The US Routes are still in place, but sometimes join up and become the same road as the Interstate. I grew up in Illinois, and US 51 through the middle of the state is a good example. When I-39 was built, it traveled almost exactly the same route, so it is referred to by both numbers: I-39 and US 51 in spots.

Around these parts, I-10 travels the same route as US 90 east of San Antonio. In Seguin, the roads split again. North of town it's the same route as US 87, but I believe the split somewhere around the Fredricksburg exit.

The really confusing part is downtown where I-10 and I-35 are on the same road, until you have to exit for I-10, then it becomes 10/US90; and I-37 and US 281 are the same road south of downtown, but it's just US 281 north of downtown, even though it's the same road.

10 east takes you to Houston
90 takes you to Del Rio
87 is actually Rigsby Ave. then it becomes Memorial Parkway once it crosses 410.

87 is not connected to 10 in anyway, it's on the signs because its a state route and is accessed via 10.

As expected it has gotten easier as I learn the main highways and how they relate to each other. I haven't had to pull out my gps as often lately. Thanks.
