Received a government looking form from Homestead Recording Service, Austin, TX. First name was cut off and last name last letter was cut off. we were getting ready to fill it out and pay the $35 fee plus some other fees of $14 and $20. at the bottom of the form it said, This document is for advertising of services. It's not an official document from the state of Texas. We were reading somewhere that this form is completely free to fill out and file. We don's want some third party to get our personal information and file anything on our behalf.
We were told this form is free to get and file.
Where can we get the form and how can we file it ?

The companys that offer to fill the form out for you are a scam. The homestead exemption it's self isn't though.

look up your county property tax office and read online or call and ask how to get your homestead exemption.

Your realtor should have mentioned this to you - not a requirement but good customer service IMHO.

Filing your own Homestead exemption literally takes 5 minutes plus time to get it notarized and mailed. Do not pay someone else for this service. If you previously filed on your current property then you do not need to refile. In Bexar County can check your previous status by looking up your property on bcad.org, also get the necessary form from there.

Not a scam. These companies operate on the premise that consumers are too lazy or incompetent to research, acquire and complete a simple form--it is a legitimate scheme to separate you from your money.

There is a service provided for your money--but while legitimate, it is a waste of money.

Search the web for your county assessor or tax collector and you will find the form and instructions to do the homestead exemption yourself. Easy.

IT's a scam if you are pretending to be someone you are not. THe instructions clearly say to have your drivers licence with your current address attached to your application. Besides the name on the scam application was incorrect.

The form that comes directly from the Bexar Appraisal District, that you can file yourself without a fee, also requires a copy of your driver's license.

I agree with WVREDLEG -- It isn't technically a scam, because it is a legitimate service, albeit an unnecessary one. But I think they mislead homeowners into thinking they need to pay a third party to fill out & submit a form that can be done at no charge by the homeowners themselves.

Filing the homestead form, and the form itself, are FREE! Disregard offers from companies saying they will file the homestead form for a fee. Those offers are just a SCHEME to get your money.
