Actually, the best place to find old post cards from San Antonio is on eBay. There are a lot of ebay stores speciallizing in vintage post cards from various cities around the US. That's been my secret!!! However, many of these stores don't have search features, so you have to go through them page by page. But, I have to say, everytime I get on eBay and look, I find something new. I just found this one today, showing a little different view of Hot Wells.

I still haven't found but the one for Wolfe's Inn, yet. I'm beginning to think the search word "San Antonio" is causing the problem. For most of it's existance, Wolfe's Inn was outside, way outside of San Antonio. It was actually closer to Shavano village. Primo's post about the nine mile hill also has me thinking on some different search options. Not getting anywhere, though.

What is going on with the phone numbers on these postcards (B 3-1260)? Was the US so under populated that we didnt need the seven didget system yet? Just a letter and some numbers.

Here are some more Hot Wells postcards I didnt see on TheAlamoCity website. Also, Terrell Wells??

Look at the architecture of the hotel at Terrel springs and the architecture of the building in the Harlandale postcard. It's very, very similar. I wonder if the Terrel hotel was one of the buildings on the site of the Harlandale spa, just taken at a later date when the Harlandale spa was no longer in operation.

TERRELL WELLS, TEXAS. Terrell Wells, eight miles southwest of downtown San Antonio in central Bexar County, was named for the mineral wells on the land of prominent politician Frederick Terrell and became a post office and health resort in the 1920s. One business and a population of fifty were reported there in 1930, and in 1940 the population was 150. The wells were closed after World War II, and by the 1950s the community was no longer shown on maps. The name was preserved in the local junior high

I don't know about the six digit number, but I remember my phone number as being: PE 2-9565, that is 732-9565. And I am only 40.....

A house I used to own near I10 and west Mistletoe was built in the very early 1900 or late 1890's. Behind the tar paper on the garage wall we found an old service station poster touting a 4 digit phone number. It was, unfortunately lost in a move many years later.

Since I've given away all my secrets, I found this rare postcard on ebay today from Hot Wells. It shows the INTERIOR of the resort. I have never seen this one before.

I remember back in the 70's most places in Virginia used two letters and 5 numbers as a phone number. I never understood the logic behind using letters in a phone number, but whatever made them happy, I guess!

That dates back to 5 digit phone numbers and exchanges. Like current area codes, exchanges allowed the same 5 digits to be used in different locations. Each exchage had a name that was used to create the 7 digit numbers that came next. This helped reduce confusion with the switch over. The Walnut exchange in San Antonio became the 92x-xxxx format because W and A were on the 9 and 2 keys. Before that you called the operator and asked for a number in a certain exchange rather than dialing it directly.
