I sometimes get the Chicken fried steak at Cracker Barrel, But I usually just get it at Jim's. I know you are talking about the best chicken fried steak, but I don't need one bigger than the plate. I used to live near the Tip Top but I never went there--It was always too crowded!

Marie Callender's has a pretty good CFS. In general, the best foods are not found at chains but I think they get that one right.

It's funny you mention that, because they have a frozen dinner version you can buy in grocery stores. I'm sure that the restaurant version is very good, but the frozen one is just like the ones served in school cafeterias. The frozen ones taste nothing like real chicken fried steak.

Bud Jones. It's at the intersection of Military Drive and Commercial. The steak is so big that it hangs off the plate! It is hard to beat if you are not concerned with calories or fat.

Yes I know it is not in SATX but I can now report that I have been to the new location of Heitmillers in Waco. Ordered the 1/2 order which was huge and very good! They serve the gravy on the side. A steak that big it would get soggy. Great thing as well, 7.99 including two sides which are huge. If you order a full order @11.99 you get two steaks of equal size. If you remember fried mushrooms they have those but if you want the gravy with them you have to ask. As for the gravy, it's good but you need to doctor it with a little more salt and a lot more pepper.

I am going to be back in San Antonio this summer and will begin my "I gotta eat here, and here and there" list soon.

I have had CFS at most of the local places mentioned in this thread and can't really recommend any. My problem is, if the steak and breading are the way I like it, I don't like the gravy, or the other way around. Most are not too bad though, I have even had ok ones at chains sometimes. I don't care for either Tip Top's or Bud Jones's
