I will be working at Brooks City-Base and wanted to see what the commute was like from a few areas. We are looking at living in the following general areas:

Zip Code: 78258/9 - drive straight down 281 to the Base

Zip Code: 78251 - take 151 to 90 to 37 to the Base

Overall, which would be a better commute? Or are they about the same, traffic wise?

Thanks for any help.

You would be much better off if you were living near Brooks City Base and working in the areas you mentioned. That being said the worst of two evils would probably be the drive down 281. You will probably just have to sit in stop and go freeway traffic half of the time. With 151 it would be 75% to 80% of the time. I'm refering to frequency of times. Such as 75% of the time being 75 days out of 100 days not 75% of your drive time. You will be competing with all of the rest of the people that live in the NW or NC area and trying to drive east or south at the same time. If you choose the NW side scenario you will see what I mean on HWY 90. Just looK at the other side of the freeway as you're sitting at a stand still or moving at 5 mph. The other side will usually be going 65-70 mph.

281 is s bear depending on what time you are doing the traveling... Going into town (which is the direction you would be headed) during the morning is pretty slow going as is the return back.. I am not sure about 151 down to 90 and then 37 but I would bet it would be less traffic..

Probably not, in the mornings 151 to 90 is practically like a standstill going eastbound all the way to probably IH 35. In the afternoons it's the same thing going in the westbound direction.

I worked at Brooks for over 4 years, commuting from Westcreek.

I took 151 -> 90 -> 37. Traffic gets somewhat busy on 151, and on 90, but hardly ever a standstill. I would definitely try to leave early - I left my place at 0625 and didn't have very many problems. 0630 and on, and there's a definite difference in traffic! I hated leaving late! But it still wasn't that bad...

That's not been my experience. I leave about 10 minutes to 7 every morning and take 151 to 90 to 35 to go to Fort Sam. I get off on Walters Street. It only takes me about 25 minutes to get to work. Now if there's an accident it will take a bit longer---but that's with anywhere in this city if there's an accident. And I leave at 4:30...it does take a bit longer in the afternoons--I'm usually picking my son up near where we live at about 10 minutes after 5.

I worked at BCB until recently - one of my colleagues lived at 151 and 410 and took 410 all around to 37N. It's a bit longer mileage wise, but it's smooth sailing. He got fed up with sitting in traffic everyday on Hwy 90Eastbound.

My husband works off 151/Callaghan and we live downtown, so he goes against traffic (before BCB, I worked there as well), he doesn't leave til 7:15 or so but says the inbound traffic is always backed up.

Still, it's probably better than 281. I loved working at BCB, a quick 10 minutes down I-37, almost as nice as working downtown and walking to work.

Brooks is very nice now, and improving. I was sad to leave it, but then, working at home is a very good thing too!

That's true, if you leave early enough. I was talking about normal commute times of around 7:30. I leave the Brooks City Base area at 7:30 and make it to work at 410 & Culebra by 8:00. I would hate to have to leave my house at 6:30 or 6:45 and get there an hour early just to avoid the traffic.

Well I live by the Quarry and leave at two different times every other day. On the days I leave my house at 540, I get to Brooks CB before 6. On the days I leave at 705 I get here by 725. There is never a time traffic is slower that 55-60ish on my drive in the morning. This morning there were a couple of accidents and it took me 35 minutes but that was the first time it took me over 30 minutes in a couple of months. Of course 78258 is farther out but that is how it is from 410 inbound.
