Relocating to SA area in a month or so. I'm wondering if it's helpful to get a realtor to help us find rentals? Do they have access to rentals that are by owner? What is the best way to find a good realtor?

There are several on here, as well, people can PM you. They will have access to FRBO IF the owner has listed it with MLS, but not just if they stuck a sign in the yard.

Since the landlord generally pays the fee, I would enlist a realtor's help, as they can guide you to the best area given your living and $ requirements.

Just look at some of the properties that are desirable. Make a note of the realtor. That is one way to get a realtor. When renting it is not as stressful as when buying- you need less support. However a realtor does the groundwork, arranges for you to have access to properties you are interested in. It does not cost you a dime, so why not get one.
I recently moved to SA. The realtor I had was flaky, forgetful and not organized. However she was able to arrange for me to see 8 houses over two days. I just showed up when scheduled- she took care of gate codes, info etc.

We are relocating to SA and were not familiar with the area or neighborhoods. I found a fabulous realtor who has been invaluable to me! We recently completed our exploration trip (10 days) to narrow down neighborhoods and look at different houses; and she spent a few days just driving us around, showing us traffic patterns and how to get to the places that we'd need to go most and shopping areas. I would highly recommend it!
