Any tips on a good metal detector? I have seen many but don't have a clue as to which one is good. Could I get a nice one for $300?

Garrett (Garland, Tx) and Whites are the two prominent companies that spring to mind. There may be more nowadays.

Garrett costs more but is "local" so to speak.

Try here for a start..... http://www.garrett.com/hobby/springSpecial08.pdf

One of the couples that we cruise are really into detecting and he takes his detector with him on every cruise...does VERY well on the beaches...only in the VI you are not allowed on St Johns because they are National Parks. He has found jewelry, coins and even a few pieces of silver from old shipwrecks.

I think we are going to get one just to walk around with and enjoy...thanks so much for the website as a good place to start for info Deep Forest!
