I don't think this cheap shot was necessary. While they may not be your or my beliefs, trashing someone's religious beliefs is as disrespectful as someone trashing our lifestyles.

That being said, the lesbian community in San Antonio is very much alive.

It was a cheap shot for a cheap shot. Mine was moreso a humorous musing, but don't get me wrong when I openly admit that I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Agnostic.

I wasn't trashing, btw. You'd know if I was trashing someone: The bite would be worse and you'd sit there with a guilty chuckle.

I'm not lesbian but there is a healthy lesbian community in SA and you will find plenty of like minded friends and things to do. Most San Antonian's seem to be indifferent or just go about their business without much concern about alternative life styles. I have lived here all my life and nobody ask me where I go to church so I don't know who Hello is hanging out with to be ask that question so often. There are churches that are open minded if you wish to join one. Monticello Park is a very nice historical neighborhood that has loads of charm, affordable housing, great location and has a nice sprinkling of gays. It is a very eclectic neighborhood... lots of artist, doctors, lawyers, retired folks, hispanic/angle, single, married, with and w/o children. Also very quite. It is an Oasis.

Ah...well, I can be quite the trash-talker myself, but some things (for me) are off limits and someone's religious beliefs is one of those things.

Oh, and, by all means, trash away.

I'm sorry, but the degree to which fundamemtalist Christian religious sects pervade a culture has everything to do with how welcome many lesbians would feel, as those sects are outspoken in their disapprobation of gays and lesbians. Just stating the facts here. I thought that the poster would like to know that there are fundamentalist churches more frequently and conveiently located than drugstores. This is the South, people. The administration at UTSA is well-networked in church and they deny tenure to every gay faculty member they can identify. These scandals have been in the network news (big one in 2004).

Also to the OP, you ask for affordable housing, lesbians, and libraries. I think you would find those here. I was just trying to warn you about other things you'd get along with those--things that you did not ask for. I don't think that you'd encounter any safety issues, so that's good.

To the OP: Hello13685 is the resident "Everything sucks in San Antonio" reporter. Every group has to have one.

San Antonio is not San Francisco, but it does indeed have a very active and vibrant gay and lesbian community. It also has many gay and lesbians who are active members of mainstream society.
Here's an annual show put on by the gay and lesbian community -

Funny...I've never known anyone to feel unwelcomed. Besides, most of the women I know are smart enough to know how particular churches feel about their lifestyles and don't go around setting themselves up for rejection or abuse. Certain pastors/priests do preach against gays, but usually in the confines of their own churches and to their own congregants. It's not like Fred Phelps is running loose in SA.

That's true, SanAntoQT. People can avoid these churches, but to even absorb the vibe of it being all around you... that the people walking next to you in the mall, or shopping at H.E.B. near you, are giving you weird looks. That would be such a huge change from L.A. where it's more "live and let live." The nice and accepting people on this forum would seem to be the exception. Now, I don't think that San Antonio would be as bad as rural Tennessee where somebody would drive onto your lawn in a pickup truck and nail roadkill to your door!

And Chakapu is right, I tend to be very negative about SA, so keep that in mind. I'm a liberal woman, and like the OP, I'm from Southern California. Unlike most here, my opinions (and they're all opinions only!) are not colored by a sense of local Texas pride, which can be just as delusional as my negativity. Best of luck to you!

Wierd looks? Hmmm...maybe in the past, but the last time I was home, I didn't notice anyone staring or giving wierd looks while walking hand-in-hand with my girlfriend at the mall. Maybe it's just me and I don't give a flying f*ck, as do most of the people I know.

And, yes, Hello13685, I do notice that you tend to be very negative, which colors your opinions as much as anyone's with a sense of local Texas pride colors theirs. I would suggest that the OP take everything posted on here with a grain of salt. San Antonio has its issue, but so does every place else...yes, EVEN L.A....so, it's best to keep in that in mind.

I consider myself a liberal woman (technically socialist). Like the OP I am from Southern California - LA area, have lived in 4 states and 4 other countries, and I am not colored by a sense of local Texas pride.

I just happen to have decided that I'm best off enjoying the place I am living, and have learned that wherever I go, there's something worthwhile about the place. That wasn't hard to find in San Antonio - I live amidst a very diverse community - mix of socio economic status, ethnicities (tho not as much as I'd like), mix of professions from artists to doctors to truck drivers, mix of sexual persuasions, and mix of lifestyles from young singles to married with kids to elderly. And they're all interesting people.

I don't think LA is as much 'live and let live" as one might expect. Though there's the appearance of open-mindedness, LA has its own very strict society norms. They may not reflect Victorian England, but there are certain expectations about how one should act that I find obnoxious. If anything, San Antonio has a much more 'live and let live" attitude - no pressure to put on airs, no pressure to be a size 2 with plastic boobs, no pressure to drive an SUV, yada yada.
