My husband has been offered a contracted civilian job at Lackland AFB. We have a 12 y.o. son and a small dog that we would be bringing with us. We currently live on the east coast, have never been to San Antonio. Safety and a great school is of major concern to us. My son is not very athletic but is involved in martial arts, excellent student. Him being a new kid, I worry about bullying, so a friendly environment would be great! I was reading some of the older threads, but now that it's 2017 thought there might be some updated suggestions? Thank you.

Your best bets are the Northeast ISD, Alamo Heights ISD, Northside ISD for San Antonio. Comal and Boerne for a longer commute. School districts here are much larger than those on the east coast. Look for your preferred High School, then Middle School.

What is your price range?

Any of the areas just outside of Lackland, specifically the Alamo Ranch and Westover Hills areas would be perfectly fine. The big majority of those kiddos are military kids. Search military and relocation and you'll get an infinite number of threads.

Two hour commute doesn't sound fun to me with some of those suggestions

While I was referencing more school districts than commute time, I'm not sure that everything in these areas would be a 2 hour commute...especially since NISD is right there...

You said com all and boerne for a longer commute but that's idiotic to live there knowing you're driving to lackland. It's a 45-60 min trip from Alamo ranch unless you leave around 6am and 3pm before traffic starts

Depends on how long your husband is willing to sit in his car. San Antonio's population has grown way too much, too fast.
Roads are very crowded all the time.
I work at Lackland and drive Highway 90 from Schertz. it's 29 miles from my drive way to my parking spot. (I've clocked it)
I used to work 730am-430pm before I changed to 630am-330pm. If it had not been for that change in time, I might not be working there just because of the long commute due to traffic. It is very bad at the later time, not just on the highway but around the base gates trying to get in/out.
When I got off at 430 it would take me over an hour/hour and half to get home b/c of traffic, accidents, construction(which seems to be forever and ongoing around here).
Now getting off at 330, it only takes 40-45. That is still long to me, but bearable, at least for now.
Loop 410 (where NEISD is headquartered) is even worse. If I were to go that route, It'd take 1-2 hours to get home. Anyone that drives that way knows the 410/IH 35 interchange can get backed up for hours and if there is an accident, forget it. 410 has some of the worst driver IMO too, I have witnessed too many nasty accidents on that road.
Good luck to you

My husband and I are on the far north side in Canyon Springs. Half of the community is NEISD and other half is Comal ISD. Both are great areas. He does commute to Lackland everyday. The time it takes to get to and from work will really depend on the time of day so if your husband will have the flexibility to go in early and leave earlier that is great. My husband gets to work between 7:00 - 7:30 am. He normally leaves around 4:30 which is a heavier traffic time and takes about an hour. If he leaves at 4 pm to come home the drive is about 45 minutes. He is OK with the commute since we do like the area we live in. (Zip Code 78260)
