The good ol' person who pulls up to you and says: Wah, wah, tale of woe. Out of gas.

Been stopped by that several times lately in HEB and Home Depot lots. I noticed that they look for older folks to harass.

Just say: Sorry - and then keep doing what I'm doing. Don't approach them.

Or give them the "don't even think about it" look. Seems to work just fine with me.

I prefer to politely move along. A guy at work was panhandled and decided to give the guy a speech about working for a living. Got beat up for that. You can be polite and determined at the same time. Anyway, keep moving if you can.

well the other tactic I use is telling the truth. I never, repeat never, have cash on me. I'm the guy that will lose it if it's on me, so it's plastic only. beg all they want, they won't get any cash
the bigger fear is that it's getting close to shopping season, which means being approached at every mall/shopping center.

The panhandler literally just beat him up? That's crazy.

They get "the look" from me - along with the sight of my right hand moving towards my hip. I don't allow ANYONE to invade my space.

My cane is a deadly weapon. If the thick shaft is not enough to warn them off then the sword inside will.

I also carry a concealed weapon if all else fail.

I used to carry applications to work at McDonalds for such occasions. I don't think that they accept applications by paper anymore. I need to find a new application for work to carry with me.

I get these people being annoying as I avoid them which seems to always work for me. Threat by gun seems a bit extreme measure to take right off the bat when they approach you.

They aren't as bad as pushy door to door salesmen that don't take no for an answer.

Just happened to me last week at Huebner Oaks. It was a couple and a baby in an old, beat up Pontiac Aztek. I declined to give them anything but the whole thing just felt so strange.
