Today at the car wash I ran into a woman with the gas lid completely busted off, and she told me that she put in $60 yesterday, only to find an empty tank this morning.

Everyone who owns a car be on the lookout for gas thieves! They're back and in full force!
Speaking of stealing gas, this thread has been hijacked

Yeah, I do miss living in Belgium where I was able to ride my mountain bike to work. It was a nice 8.5 mile commute each way, mainly on back roads through villages and fields. If the weather was nice, I had several "detours" home, to include riding along the canals. It is one thing I really miss, as one year (2004) I was able to log over 700 miles on a full-suspension mountain bike! Now the last time I rode was Nov 2006. Pretty sad...

I would love to try commuting to work; but riding from Braun Road outside of 1604 to Lackland is an adventure even I wouldn't attempt. I've jumped out of helicopters, hiked the Alps, and been in several hostile fire zones (Bosnia, Afghanistan); but trying to bicycle commute on that route in the early morning hours would be suicidal!

Cheers! M2

Get a scooter like a vespa. There's a reason why Europe and Asia are filled with them, and it's because they'll go forever on a tank of gas.

Tell me about it! When I lived in CA and in the UK I cycled *everywhere*, including to work (and in the UK, also to the grocery store, just filled up the basket on my bike).

here in SA, I feel like I'm taking my life into my hands. When I worked at Brooks (pre-kid), I lived only 7 miles away, straight shot down S. Presa (the entrance to Brooks was off S.Presa then). Easy right? No way. While traffic isn't that bad, cars are just not looking for cyclists and there's some stretches that I'd be hesitant to go through at night just because cars wouldn't see me. I looked at the bus, again, straight shot. 45 minutes.

In the end i drove, and as it was I needed my car throughout the day to travel to meetings, but as I drive a hybrid, wasn't too bad.

Now there are some bike paths downtown - very new - I'm considering checking them out, but still not convinced drivers know what to do when they see a cyclist.
