All, Moving to San Antonio next month. I'll be working in Schertz and my husband in Windcrest. I know Schertz is nicer for families, but would I be crazy to conscider Windcrest? We can get a little more for our money there. Help!

I would choose Schertz over Windcrest. Windcrest does have some nice, older homes but to me it's just gone way downhill over the years. Too "hit or miss" for me. Schertz has an old section of homes and several newer subdivisions. The traffic near Windcrest is really thick right there on 35, too. It's also busy up 35 by Schertz but there's not the never-ending construction zones like there seems to be near Walzem and Rittiman Roads, plus there's just a ton of 18-wheeler traffic due to all of the warehouses in the area.

Have lived in Schertz since 1971, when my dad went to RandolphAfBase. I live in the older part of Schertz, but there is lots of new housing in the Schertz-Cibolo area. We have a nice library, a natatorium, and YMCA. There are various little shops and local restaurants beside chains. We have Lowe's, Walmart, and also there's Home Depot in the Forum,TJMAXX,Old Navy,Target, etc. If you like movies there's Regal Cinema18 in Live oak. Or you can drive to New Braunfels to Alamo Draft House and also Creek Side theatre and lone Star Drive in. Also Santikos which is a lcoal San Antonio theatre chain is going to build at the corner of Cibolo Valley Drive and the IH35north Access Road an entertainment center. It's going to have a bowling alley, sports bar, movie theatre, etc. Heard this from our boss the purchasing director for the school district. There are events in Schertz park down by Cibolo Creek at various times of the year. You see all the time on Schertz parkway people walking or riding their bikes for excercise. There is a Baptist hospital here and various medical offices too.
The older section of Windcrest with the older homes behind luby's Cafeteria is the NICE part of Windcrest. Across the other side of Walzem Road is the ghetto side of town. it's not as nice.

There are no residential developments to the south of Walzem Road that are inside Windcrest City Limits. Windcrest proper only includes a small portion of the area south of Walzem, mostly Rackspace HQ, and tracts bordering the northbound side of IH 35 down to Eisenhauer.

And even the older part of Schertz is not bad. When we were looking at homes to buy for cash outright, we looked in Schertz by the park. I regret not buying over there. I really like the Schertz-Cibolo area.

Thanks everyone. He's dreading the drive but it seems like Schertz may be better. I lived in San Antonio about 10 years ago, but near Sea World, so not super familiar with this side of town.
