However people choose to celebrate is fine, I just can't fathom the expense.

We actually spent very little overall. But it was an expense well worth it.
I'd pay double if I had to, it was worth it to have those people there, at both of them (legal ceremony was in Europe, Religious one in the US). Both families really appreciated it, esp. as they still go on about it and thank us for having it.

I can follow that logic (the people not getting out of the area, marrying young etc..). The guy I work for was born and raised here and in his upper 30's and has very little experience outside of the south Texas area. He has travelled a little, but nowhere near as much as the rest of us in the shop have. Most everybody here (in my office) has been to or lived on at least three continents.
I also think there was probably a misunderstanding in the wording of some posts earlier. So anyhow, this weather sucks big butt and I'm about to lose it.. I wish there was a way we could hit it really, REALLY hard..

Yes, you joined the military, which your co-worker had to opportunity to do also. But without the military, just jetting off to a different continent to live, work, whatever is a little more difficult. Not impossible, just difficult for most.

Tone doesn't come through on the internet, but generalizations do. Her flip comment about "the local cultural mentality" just doesn't sit right with me, and I'm not even a native. She's entitled to her opinion, just like I'm entitled to mine. And, in my opinion, comments like hers are not going to go over well. Obviously, I'm not alone in that thinking.

Whenever I make a comment that doesn't go over well, believe me, I get called on it. Today alone I made manthechange ask his co-workers to sign an affidavit stating that he doesn't stink when he arrives at work all sweaty.

The "local cultural mentality" comment struck a nerve with me, as well. She clarified, but it still didn't sit well.

that sounds lovely.. do they bicycle to work or something?
but I'm still going to go with a native on this one. I won't even pretend to know very much about this city, but do know several people that have lived here all their life. They always know a LOT more about pretty much everything when it comes to life here and they've always been right..

and WTF is a manthechange?

He's a fellow poster that called me out this morning because he says I have a problem with people riding bikes to work. So, to "get enjoyment out of proving me wrong" he got all his co-workers to make comments about how lovely he smells, and that the smokers and garlic-eaters smell worse, blah blah blah. I really, really, really believe him when he says that those are actual comments by his co-workers, because he cut and pasted them on to C-D. So, I hope he enjoyed himself. I got a kick out of him pleasing himself.

guess that explains your location then..

I can't see how anyone could bicycle into work, not take a shower, and still smell "normal". I've worked with people that bicycle in to work and the first thing they do is hit the shower. These are very thin people who are in excellent condition, but they still sweat, which makes your body funky.. I guess his coworkers are either very nice or all have no sense of smell. I'll pretty much guarantee you I would smell him though because my sense of smell is too good. I can always tell what people are eating, even if it's something as simple as grape nuts.. I usually annoy most of my coworkers because of it too..

He probably wrote all those comments about himself.
