This seemed especially insightful for those who are relocating and want to be nearby others in the community. The only one surprising zip code for me was 78230, but it makes sense since its near the Medical Center. It might be worth bumping when all the PCSing threads start popping up.

On the Map: Where Military Veterans Choose to Live in and around San Antonio, Texas

Quote:
The highest number of veterans overall is in 78251, where almost 7,000 veterans live — many from this era’s conflicts, both Gulf War I and post-9/11 veterans. Veterans in 78251 make up almost 14 percent (13.78 percent) of the population. But 78251 is also well-represented in other ways for veterans: Home to the most women veterans in San Antonio (almost 1,500) — see image that follows — more than 1,500 Vietnam-era veterans, almost 150 Korean war-era veterans, and approximately 40 World War II veterans.

It's too bad the maps weren't extended out to the county level. I have always assumed that many active duty and veterans chose to live outside of the city. Still an interesting read. It somewhat explains the new, more conservative tiilt of Council District 6.

Some of them are homeless and live around the creek, churches with food pantry , and downtown under the bridges.
When gets really cold, some will go to the shelter and hospitals. We usually get bunch of them around Christmas - clean up, feed, detox, supply with resources, but they go right back where they came from. VA doesn't care.

I don't think that's a fair comment. It's not a matter of caring - it's more a matter of choice. Many wish to live outside the constraints of rules and regulations/requirements. And some are pretty dang good at stringing along and playing your heartstrings.

This was census data. Unless they were counted out there they would not have been included in this survey. Although, there is a Point in Time survey done at the start of every year for the homeless population. As the person above me said, many people (not just veterans) are fine living out on their own. Yes, the VA is a monster of a system to navigate and is frustrating. There are supports available, though. It's about advocating for yourself and being committed to getting the help, which is very hard.

That really wasn't the point of me posting this though, it was to point out that the "far west" side of San Antonio is heavily military.

There are quite a few that live outside of the SA zip codes as well. From Boerne, to Bulverde, Spring Branch, Canyon Lake, New Braunfels, etc. Would be interesting to see an analysis of the entire MSA.
