Same thing that's been going on for years. They are sub par and always have been. I'm sure there are some good deputies there, but on the whole that department doesn't have the best reputation.

It is a strong reminder that not all men and women in uniform are upstanding citizens of the community as some would like us to believe.

"Salazar said recently his department will no longer hire jailers with criminal records."

This says it all. Lowering of the standards to include "everyone", so nobody is "discriminated against", and whatever else PC views are. Back in my day, the standards were such that police had to be in shape to run when necessary, ie a certain weight for height, eyesight had to be such and such, and physical and intelligence tests were required. This is what you get when you hire those who can't even stay out of trouble themselves. They "identify" with those they come in contact with.

No "slamming" wanted. If the truth hurts, you may want to think about why this is occuring. Better yet, I advise you to go to work in the correctional field. You may just come out with a much different attitude about criminals, especially if you yourself are a law abiding citizen.

I assumed it had to do with the age of the people they hire, people in their 20's don't always make good decisions, but of the 24 incidents the newspaper cites only 10 of the officers were under 30.

I did my best to categorize them by like categories and order them greatest to least.

8 DWI
3 Domestic Violence
3 Inmate Oppression (I have a friend who worked at the Bexar County Jail as part of the SERT team, he mentioned this happens much more than is actually reported)
3 Drug (1 simple marijuana possession while the other two brought meth into the jail to sell)
2 Sexual Assault
2 Assault
1 Sexual Assault Child
1 Theft
1 Fraud

Police force all over the country seem to attract (and hire) the worst scum:
https://www-m.cnn.com/2018/10/19/us/....google.com%2F

SAPD is probably no better or worse than the others. Sadly, we probably only know a small fraction of it, because there are no comprehensive statistics available on problems with police integrity and no government entity collects data on police who are arrested..
Unions also work hard to protect police officers and their reputations.
Legal hurdles can arise in trying to obtain even basic cases, and that's on purpose. Some states' laws shield the identities of police officers who commit crimes, while some jurisdiction include nondisclosure agreements in victim settlements.

The system is rigged to protect police officers from outside accountability. The worst cops are going to get the most protection.

How many of the guilty and accused are jailers?

That is an interesting perspective . I have had ongoing contact with the Bexar county Sherrif dept trying to get them to enforce the law where I live and I am beginning to notice a circling of the wagons and perhaps a protecting of their own so to speak .

We praise military service men/woman, police officers and fire fighters as heroes, which is good for their morale. They they have an admirable job, but remember they too are humans and can be corrupted just as any of us can.
