For all you people with bigger hearts than brains look at this:

Breitbart.tv » Professional Panhandler: Girl Pretends to be Homeless to Pocket Cash

If you're feeling guilty give to a shelter and know that you're money is truly helping people and not prolonging their suffering...

Well that was really interesting. Since this thread was first started a few weeks ago, I've noticed numerous panhandlers every day when I'm out and about. I've started looking at their body language, patterns etc. and I'm convinced that the ones I see are professionals (panhandlers that is). I agree that money is better spent by giving to the organizations that really help with those who are in need.

So far so good, I haven't seen them for a while. Hopefully they got the picture.

I hope so. Hopefully they haven't just cycled to another intersection, just to cycle back here again...

They're always at Bandera and 1604, so I imagine you will see them again.

Yep, been noticing them a lot out there lately. I also notice their tactic of having a folding sign that they keep closehold until they know there isn't a cop around (despite being pretty obvious). And even when the cops do go by, they usually just give them a warning over the PA system and drive on.

The panhandlers are an eyesore and very noticeable to visitors (my uncle and aunt from Germany are here and have already commented on them). The city needs to send out an unmarked car to the well-known locations and make some inquiries, as I don't believe these people are as bad off as they would like you to think.

By the way, I recalled this thread when we went to the Alamo yesterday. You can't walk from the Rivercenter to it without being accosted for money by what I can only believe is sanctioned panhandling. It is also distracting and shouldn't be allowed. These activities as well as others, such as the orators that hang out in front of the Cenotaph, need to be stopped as they are embarassing to our city.

Cheers! M2

I think the city should take a different approach to the problem. Just fine people that give to the panhandlers. If the funds dry up, they either go elsewhere or find legitimate work.

I saw one of the repeat panhandlers riding his bike down 1604 today - right by Potranco. Guess they didn't go far.
