For the first 19 years of my life, my family did not have a car. It was not easy; we took a taxi home once a month after grocery shopping because taking the bus every week would take too long. I had to take three buses to get to a job that was a 20-minute drive away. It's possible to live without a car, but as others have said, it's not recommended.

You have to be prepared for VIA service changes. You might live on a bus line and, all of a sudden, VIA decides to eliminate the route or a nearby bus stop.

VIA is definitely the worst bus system of any American city I've been too. The schedule and routes are all over the place. However, if you're willing to bring a bike, that can significantly cut down on your commute time. It's not perfect but it helps a lot and all the buses have bike racks.

LOL, this is almost literally what I would face - 20-25 minutes commute and 2 1/2 hours by VIA. There are those who make it work but like Yenisei says, you are a hostage to the bus schedule with no alternative public transport available.
