I was glad to see the last sheriff finally defeated in the election.
But the sheriff's new chase policy (in response to Police Chief's complaint) is too cute by half.

I say chase them all down in a shower of arm fire but that’s probably just me.

The aggressive police chase is maybe why the SAPD officer was injured in the first place? This isn't the wild west, the road is shared by many.

Maybe instead criminals should obey the law? Or is that not the way we do things any more......

You are shifting gears now. I am talking about when a police chase starts to endanger the public and others not involved in the chase. Plus, there is no need to sensationalize police chases by bringing a crew from COPS show along.

The police are pursuing folks engaged in criminal activity - fleeing police is a felony. That act alone should be a warning that they're not "otherwise law-abiding" folks. The camera crew was there for the ride - had they pulled over, there wouldn't have been a chase, would there?

It seems like you and I are not discussing the same thing here. I am debating on when the police should decide to continue a high speed chase or stop in the interest of public safety.

In a perfect world of everyone being "law-abiding folks", then we wouldn't even need the police at all. Lets be realistic though, that simply doesn't exist so don't reply to me like I am being naive here.

You are when you want a chase to be called off - you end up with MORE chase starts, because the perps KNOW the PD won't be allowed to pursue them, and therefore more will get away unpunished.

It is not when *I* want a chase called off. You keep twisting this around and around.

it is about establishing department guidelines for how chase is conducted. The police should never be given "Just do what it takes to stop them" kind of freedom because innocent people may also get hurt or die in the process.

I found it unnecessary for McManus to go on tv and call out another agency the way he did. Just call up Mr. Salazar next time and have a discussion.
