If you sign a contract saying they are your realtor, what if they end not being a good realtor can we change our minds and "fire" him or her?

You can if it states that you can in the contract. It's all about the written contract. Feel free to demand an "out clause" stating that you can cancel at any time if you're not satisfied. Do not let any realtor tell you it's not possible.

The good realtors do this with ease because they don't have many unsatisfied customers but the bad agents will hold on to you for 6 months based on the contract.

Good luck!

There is a paragraph in the agreement called "special provisions". I write in that "Either party may terminate this agreement at any time with written notice." I know a lot of us do that. I use the term "either party" because I've had clients that I've fired before too, so it protects both parties.

Have your agent put that into the agreement. If they're uncomfortable doing it, interview more.

If it is not in the agreement already, and you signed the agreement, there is still a way to get out.
I've done it before. I wrote a letter to the realtor saying I was ending the agreement becaue of poor performance or failure to follow terms and then list what is not good. If the listing agent will not agree to release the contrat, you can complain to the state board of realtors with the complaints and a copy of the letter.
A good realtor will let it go with the letter. A poor performing realtor who will not release the listing agreement, does not want to deal with an investigation by the board.
I'm sorry to hear of problems with realtors, I hope you get your resolution without too much trouble.

We have an out in ours too. We also have it in our purchase of our new home the fee goes to whatever realtor sells our home encase we change realtors thru the process I don't want the old rep getting commission on new house being built.

Yes, I had to sign one when looking for my ranch. The way out for me was to ensure I mailed them a letter saying I no longer required their service.
