For the most part, the brazen prostitution you would frequently see years ago on lower Broadway is gone. Active neighborhood associations and community policing have largely eliminated that problem. That's not to say that there isn't still prostitution in the area... certainly there is... just not as out in the open as it once was. I'm not familiar with the Cherry Street area, but if you walk the side streets off Broadway between Mulberry and Grayson late at night, you might find what you're looking for. Also, I hear that the motel next to the vacant O'Neil Ford-designed car dealership next to Brackenridge Park is pretty much the only "by-the-hour" place left on Broadway. You might want to hang out there to see what you get.

You also might try around S. Presa and Steves. There were some "by the hour" places there, too. Roosevelt Ave. had some activity going on, as well.

There used to be a lot, for San Antonio anyway, down there, but like Celeste was saying the city really made an effort to clean it up. I don't think they're all gone from that area though, especially the street that runs parallel and behind Broadway. The last time I turned down that street to hook up to I-35 I saw a few of what appeared to be prostitutes walking around behind the buildings. Couldn't say if they were female or guys in drag, lol. I wasn't trying to get a closer look, just get out of there. I remember seeing on the news about activity on Austin Highway where the stretch of motels are. Maybe that's where they went.

Try looking at the MYSA.com crimebase-- MySA.com: Crimebase (http://crimebase.mysanantonio.com/ - broken link)

You can search by crime, prostitution in this case, and it lists a bunch of recent arrests/investigations and where they happened. That might give you a start where to go look? Have fun .....um.....taking pictures, lol.

The motels on Austin Hwy are being eradicated one by one, so business has moved elsewhere.

Check out Dakota St at S. Hackberry, that appears to be a hot spot.
MapQuest Maps:

I did the history of the red light district from 1880's to the 1940's. We had a legal red light district until Mamie Eisenhower pressured Ike and the City Council to close it down in 1941. I had it on this sight for about a month or two but have since shut it down. I later did photos myself in East St. Louis in 2005 and 2006.

I've seen them there, too. I've also noticed a couple of trannys working Roosevelt. One day a guy in a mini mini miniskirt was parading down Roosevelt with nothing on underneath. I am still looking for something sharp to stab out my mind's eye with. The girls look bad! Skin and bones, and looking so old, even though you can tell they are probably fairly young still.

If you can get pictures, I can guarantee gritty.

Ordinarily, one would have to visit the personals section of Craig's List to find such informative details regarding temporary companionship for cash and interesting photography subjects.
