Not counting local chains that started here (i.e. Luby's) did any major restaurant and retail chains make it to San Antonio before Houston and DFW? The only one I can think of is Zantigo which only had locations in San Antonio and nowhere else in Texas.

Does Pat O'briens count? I am surprised that there is one in San Antonio of all places

Believe it or not, I think San Antonio actually used to have the only two US locations of the ‘Mr. Cod’ fish and chips UK chain. It was short lived though.

One was on Dezavala and the other one was on Grissom rd. (I ate at the Dezavala location a few times)

Very few, especially when it comes to shopping.

Food: Perhaps low-grade fast food, but never the higher-end chains.

Shopping: None that I can think of. Dallas, Houston and Austin have the higher earners, so in turn they get the flagships.

I can't think of any offhand, when it comes to National chains. Local/regional (i.e., south/central Texas origin) would be another story.

Yup, low-grade fast food fits the demographics of San Antonio so that makes sense. The amount of stripe malls here with laundry mats, nail salons, brick-and-mortar insurance, etc. is normal.

Many of the Austin-based restaurants are brought here last after expanding to D/FW and Houston.
