We had tons of sand burrs in our yard when we moved here in May and were told it was probably too late to do much about it. We were told to use pre-emergent spray in the New Year. So, here's my question....what should i use to spray it with (any good brands?) and WHEN should I spray?

Thanks in advance!

Heh, good luck! I've tried everything in my back yard for years. From fertilizer granuals to weed sprays. 5 or more times a year. I did throw sod down on half the back yard and that took care of that half. I just have to break down and resod the last half.

Seriously, we had them and we bought a mower with a bagger and we bagged them. It took a couple of years but they are all gone now.
The burrs are seeds so catching them in the bagger really helps to stop them from growing.

Good luck.

I usually catch the burrs with my toes and my feet!

Exactly! And they somehow find their way into our house from time to time... This concerns me because our baby will be crawling around by summer and may come across one on the carpet -yikes!

Spread some Corn Gluten Meal on your yard about the end of February. It acts like a pre-emergent for weeds then acts as a fertilizer for you grass later on.

Yes, this is good for your grass. It kills grubs too. Buy it at any feedstore it is much cheaper.

Default Sand Burr Cure...

Try MSMA. High Yield #529. You can only use it in Bermuda grass, NOT ST. AUGUSTINE!!!! You mix it up according to directions and spray it on either by spot spraying or with a pull behind tank sprayer. I think it has to be above 85 degrees, too. It is a miracal chemical control, but you have to stick with it and do a strict regiment.

YOu got it, I was always told the ONLY way to get rid of them is to spray regularly AND mow with a bag because they reseed themselves.

Then you have to pray your neighbor is as diligent as you are.
