I’ve had it with trying to nicely deter this family of raccoons from frequenting my pool area every night. I’ve decided to launch into trap mode and I figure one or more of you have come up with a particular trap and bait that you are fond of.

So if you have recommendations, I’d like to know. Yes the little effers will be released and yes at least 5 miles away. In the woods. With luck we will trap the whole family at once.

Does Texas not have a raccoon rabies problem? That's good. Here in Maryland raccoons, skunks, foxes, feral cats, coyotes can't be trapped and released do to the rabies problem. You also have to have a trapping permit.

Cat food is a good bait although that may attract neighborhood cats. Hav-A-Hart traps are the go to.

Back when Iran was a huge market for furs, we trapped 'em using sardines - they loved 'em.

Humane traps can often be rented from your city's animal control department. They will also come pick up the critter once it's trapped, too. I've had the best luck with using a Snickers bar as bait. Worked every time!

You were told incorrectly. Pest companies in Bexar aplenty perform this service. They just want like $200 for four traps for 2 days.

Also, the idea is to attract the coons without attracting the cats.

Thankfully no I haven’t heard of coons here having rabies. Or requiring permits. I will however check with the folks at 311.

It's not.
I use this one for the same reason as the OP. I can pretty much catch one every night if I put it out. I just put a couple of crackers in it for bait.

Take them about 10 miles away near some woods and release them. I have one in a trap right now as a matter of fact. About to go release him.
