Hey I just wanted to know if anyone here has xeriscaped their front or back yard in town.I don't want the hassle of having to do yard work in the summer time and was wondering if anyone has a rock type landscape like a lot of homes in El Paso or Phoenix.Have you seen any in town?I would appreciate it.

You can do whatever you want with your yard. It’s not like everyone is doing it, but I’ve seen some yards xeriscaped.

Of course, you can! It's even recommended and rewarded by SAWS.

Won't be cheap, though:
The average cost to xeriscape a yard ranges from $16,000-$18,000, with the average homeowner spending around $17,085 for xeriscaping a 1,200 sq. ft. yard with shrubs, groundcovers, plants, and the placement of rocks in key locations to promote water conservation.

It needs HOA approval in my neighborhood. Several neighbors have (well had after the storm) nice cactus yards.

I did it to my backyard after putting in a pool because I didn’t want to reseed what was left. Back yard is small. Maybe 0.1 acre. Pool took up ⅓ of it and patio another ⅓ so we just did that to the rest.

I didn’t need hoa approval for the landscaping in the back yard. I did for the pool.

Saws will give you discounts or credits if you do it however you have to get them involved in the planning. This is a mistake I made in not contacting them until after the fact. One of their experts needs to come look at what you’re doing.

Just keep in mind we receive 4 times as much rain as Phoenix so you might run into more weeding if not done right.

Okay you guys I'm really digging the responses so far.Very informative,I'm learning a lot. I always thought xeriscape looked a lot more beautiful than huge swaths of grass but I'm crazy.Xeriscape in San Antonio looks gorgeous.

This. The climate in San Antonio is very different than Phoenix and El Paso. Xeriscaping works but you shouldn't just copy what you did back in Phoenix. Consult a local landscape expert and save yourself money time and headache in the long run.

yes if you don't have an HOA, but if you live in an HOA, you'll need to check their restrictions or approval process first.
