First of all, welcome!

To address your questions:

BBQ/Burgers: SA really isn't a great BBQ town, but we're an hour's drive away from several of the best joints in the country (Coopers in Llano, Kreuz Market in Lockhart, Meyers in Elgin, Salt Lick in Dripping Springs). For burgers, Chris Madrid's, Sam's, and Timbos are all "classic" SA places.

Ice Cream: Justin's is fantastic; they make specialty ice cream for many local restaurants. It's really the only "independant" place, though Amy's is also good (an Austin-based franchise).

Pastries: It's touristy, but Mi Tierra has great mexican pastries.

Coffee: Sip, Olmos Perk, Ruta Maya are all good.

Oh - and get ready for Mexican breakfast! Migas, chilaquilles, chorizo con huevos, pozole, barbacoa, all with fresh tortillas and chile/salsa!!!
