I am new to SA & we do not have Sonic or HEB back home...when the Sonic kid comes out to the car with my order, how much do I tip? What about the kid who pushes my grocery cart out & loads the car. A couple of times they have walked away while I was still buckling my kids in.

HEB kids don't expect tips. Sonic? I usually just lift a regular tip. These days I would leave 20%.

HEB employees are not allowed to accept tips, so just don't tip them... a hearty thank you is fine. At Sonic, I usually tip 10% or tell them "keep the change"...they like getting tips but I'm not sure how many people do it or if they expect it.

I always tip at Sonic. Usually around 10%. It's always received merrily by the order deliverer.

I think there's another thread about tipping at HEB. IIRC, they're trained to refuse tips.

10% doesnt cut the mustard these days.. it is more like 15% ... on a 50$ order you would generally tip em $7.50 for their efforts. remember this.. they only get paid 2.50 an hour if that.. and rely heavily on their tips...

Are you sure they get paid only 2.50? I always thought they get minimum wage?

$2.50 is usually min wage at regular sit down restaurants. Trust me, people don't tip 15-20 percent a lot of times even then and you absolutely work your tail off for them! At sonic they get paid min wage plus tips. That's not to shabby seeing as how they come to your car and drop food off for about 30 seconds and take off! Think about how many cars they see in an hour, if each even gave them a 50 cent tip...
There have been times when I would try to tip but couldn't do it fast enough, they run off. They must be used to not being tipped I guess. I'd do a keep the change thing. Come on people, they are walking food from a kitchen to a car door....that's it!

Wrong! The wait staff at Sonic get minimum wage PLUS tips... they would like you to think they only get paid $2.50/hr but that is not true. I worked with a teacher (yes, a teacher) last year who worked at Sonic. She loved to tell her "sob" story and get more $$$ out of the customers. I think leaving the change is more than fine. 20% at Sonic is just silly IMO. All they do it bring you the food. (They don't even take the order.) It's not like they take care of you for your entire meal- very few people actually eat there.

IMO, tipping is out of control! And this comes from a good tipper- when necessary and warranted.

Well, I give tips based on the service. If the service sucks (i.e., don't refill my drink is my biggest peeve, run by and drop the check on the table without looking and seeing or asking if we need anything) the tip will reflect that.

Anyway...I don't tip at HEB. And I usually tip a buck or so at Sonic. Most of the kids have had this look of shock on their face when I've done it. Don't know if they are told to act that way, or if they truly don't get many people tipping. Now if I get a drink and my change is 30 or 40 cents, I tell them to keep that too.
