Gruene is about six blocks long, with about 12 businesses. Why the heck do thousands of people flock there on the weekends?

There's literally nothing there.

It is a Historic settlement with an iconic dance hall. But I think it's the tubing and rafting on the Guadalupe River that draws a lot of people there.

Default Ditto,

I have always thought the exact same thing myself about Gruene. When I wrote the identical post as you have today one time here on this forum a while back; the replies were all about the concerts. The replies were quite indignant too as though to imply, how dare I inpune the reputation of the best place around these parts.
What is the big deal about Gruene?

It is the dance hall. It has been there for over a hundred of years. It used to be out in the middle of nowhere. It now a suburban community with history.

Many moons ago, when New Braunfels was a small town, Gruene was not just a "part" of the New Braunfels area, it was a separate town. Much like how Garden Ridge was a separate community from Selma/Schertz. With the insane growth of New Braunfels, it doesn't seem as special anymore. I remember driving to Gruene with my mother and grandmother for their "market" days too. There was a big open space that we would park in a dirt parking lot and then spend all Saturday buying lacy girly things that my dad rolled his eyes at the second we got back home. Now, we'd go with my dad every once in a while, and go into those 12 shops and eat at the little restaurant near the river, but that was about it. I think the charm and character of the actual area have changed quite a bit in the last thirty or so years. Also, Gruene Hall is supposed to be awesome.

Default Kevin Bacon,

Kevin Bacon and his band to play Gruene Hall. I didn't even know he had a country band.

So it's not just me. It's a cool little town and the Gruene Hall is cool, but my God thousands of people flock there every weekend.

Brings back a good memory - I was at Gruene Hall for a Robert Earl Keen concert, went with my son. Noticed his not near me....he was in a booth in the back drinking beers with a cute blonde girl. *sigh* He was maybe 12 years old!

Good food, shops are cool (not really my thing), and then the Dance hall is legendary. What is there not to like? Why do thousands flock to the pearl? Why do thousands flock to 6th street or downtown San Antonio? Because they find it fun.

Gruene has flavor. And the Dance Hall is iconic. EVERYONE has played it.

What are you expecting from something supremely Texas? They've been resisting change for well over 100 years.
