2022 is in the lead for the driest year San Antonio has experienced so far.
When you tally up the numbers of how much rain we’ve officially recorded from January 1 to September 30, the total for 2022 comes out to only 8.20″.
That makes this year the driest year that we’ve seen in San Antonio to date, followed by 8.88″ that was recorded in 1917 and 9.50″ in 1954.

In fact, most months in 2022 have come in well short of where they climatologically should have. For example, our wettest month of the year on average, May, came in 3.54″ short with only 0.86″ recorded. Overall, San Antonio is over 16″ below the average amount of rain for the year, to date.

Thank goodness for the cold front, though. It might bring some rain...

I've seen plenty of reports of power outages this morning. KSAT says that is common after a dry spell. Luckily we have power. I'm enjoying this steady slow rain.

We are now at 8.84 after the airport received .64 inches.

That said, I'm convinced the rain gauge at the airport is off. My house is 3 miles north as the crow fly's and we have had 13.5 inches for the year. I have a rain gauge that is professional hobby grade. That or they were just unlucky.

Regardless, below is a list of recent annual rainfall:

2021: 34.61
2020: 20.40
2019: 22.07
2018: 41.20
2017: 27.33
2016: 43.92
2015: 44.22

San Antonio rainfall varies so much year to year.

It often happens that it rains at the airport, but we don't get a raindrop at Terrell Hills.

If you were to put rain gauges all over town, you would get a fairly wide variation in rainfall amounts. This is true pretty much everywhere.

Oh I agree it is just annoying that our local National Weather Service keeps 2 official climate sites in Austin and only 1 here when our area is larger. It would give us a more accurate picture of local weather. Bergstrom typically gets more rain than Mabry every year which shows local differences.

Official climate sites
  • Austin-Bergstrom International Airport
  • Austin Camp Mabry
  • San Antonio International Airport
  • Del Rio International Airport

Local San Antonio rain gauges kept by the NWS
  • Kelly Field
  • Randolph Air Force Base
  • San Antonio International Airport
  • Stinson Municipal Airport
