Some of you may have seen stories in the local media back in 2005 and since then about Marine Sgt. Merlin German, who miraculously survived severe burns over 97 percent of his body after an explosion in Iraq.

After undergoing many dramatic and painful skin grafts in the past three years, Sgt. German died recently at BAMC, during a routine procedure.

The MSNBC link below has a great summary of the story and how Sgt. German was relentlessly positive during his recovery. It's a good read and a reminder of the challenge that many recovering veterans are facing right here in our city.

This is an amazing story of survival, courage, and so many more things I can't put to words. I read about him several months ago--I believe it was the SA Express News online.

Very sad. But that is a great article on his ordeal. I'm forwarding this one to everyone I know!

Marine Sgt German actually died 11 April 2008 at BAMC.

God Bless him and those that have served, especially this Memorial Day Weekend.

As the mother of a USMC trainee (please remember Rob in your prayers, he is completing Phase 2 of the 3 Phase USMC Bootcamp, scheduled to graduate 11 Jul 08), I could not hurt more or be prouder for Sgt German and his family.

As Ronald Regan said some time ago, “Some people wonder all their lives if they've made a difference. The Marines don't have that problem.”

Semper Fidelis USMC Sgt Merlin German! Rest in Peace

Fixed in the OP. Thanks for the clarification.

Best wishes to you and your son and I thank both of you for your service. My paratrooper nephew will be discharged from the Army in a few weeks after serving a tour in Afghanistan and returning safe and sound.

Thanks...could not be more proud of ALL of our kiddos...we have two daughters in the Air Force, 2 son-in-laws in the AF, a daughter and son-in-law in the Navy, and our son in the USMC. One daughter is a dependent wife of AF...and the other decided after college to put down roots and give up the nomadic lifestyle the military offers (DH is retired AF)....she works at Toyota.

We are grateful to all of you that have served your country and THANK YOU this Memorial Day weekend for ensuring we are able to enjoy living in the best country in the world!

If you can read this, thank a teacher....if you can read this in ENGLISH, thank anyone that defended your country!

Here's a link to the original mysa.com story, back when he died.
San Antonio Express-News

Now's a good time to remember the men and women who work so hard in the burn unit. They see things none of us should have to see, and they are miracle-workers, IMO.

Bless them all.

Thanks to all who serve!
